What to Know

Critics Consensus

Zoe Kazan imbues her legacy adaptation with delicious moral quandaries and sumptuous landscapes, but it's the expanded character work from Pugh and Lee that brings justice and dignity to this new canon of East of Eden.

Audience Says

Despite a heavy premise, East of Eden's 20th century mise-en-scène and gripping pace make this Steinbeck adaptation an undeniably bingeable watch.

Credit to Kazan for finding a new way to tell it, and for making it accessible to a new audience. Go to Full Review

For a few twists of fate, [Cathy] could be any of us. And I wouldn’t be surprised if Pugh’s exquisite, gorgeously brutal rendition leads more of us to her defense. Go to Full Review

This is not my normal wheelhouse. I'm not a lit nerd... That's not usually my thing. But even if I didn't have to watch this for this show, I would probably finish it. I was that kind of into it and invested in these characters. Go to Full Review

R T @RT74695700 5 hrs ago Great show, it was brilliant and one of a kind! See more Jocelyn C @JosieMarie 6 hrs ago East of Eden is an exceptional series, beautifully acted, thoughtfully written, and deeply moving. Florence Pugh delivers an extraordinary performance as Cathy Ames, a fascinating and profoundly disturbing character. I particularly appreciated the nuanced portrayal of American history, including aspects of society I had never considered. The pacing is excellent, and the storytelling feels refreshingly different from so many contemporary prestige dramas. What impressed me most was the exploration of morality. Not every villain needs a tragic backstory to justify their cruelty. Women possess the same intelligence, agency, and capacity for moral choice as men. While I sympathized with certain injustices Cathy faced as a woman of her time, those circumstances do not excuse her deliberate cruelty. Understanding someone’s struggles is not the same as absolving them of responsibility. Powerful, heartfelt, intelligent television that stays with you long after the final episode. See more Jessica B @FilmQueen 6 hrs ago T This is PURE BRILLIANCE in every way from the acting, the directing, the script and the cinema photography!! I’m extremely fussy when I watch a series having studied him at uni years ago! This was a great series and externally addictive! Totally binged it! See more A K @RT19295878 7 hrs ago If you read the book you’ll hate it. If you know nothing of the book, you’ll love it. The acting was superb. See more Prabhu S @Babbiz 13 hrs ago Very well acted. The screenplay could have been better. See more Mattias T @MatTho 16 hrs ago The characters goals and motivations are...opaque is the kindest word I can find. I assume it´s supposed to be viewed after reading the book. Not to ramble on, but Cathy is worst who burns her own home down with the parents inside because is e-v-i-l (like using her good looks) and dad found out...? Following, the only career she possibly can pursue is prostitution! It all makes sense. Or mehaps not. See more Read all reviews
