After a seemingly fatal accident at summer camp claims young Jason Voorhees' life, his mother, Pamela, is left grief-stricken. As the town moves on, Pam clings to the hope that her son, whose body was never recovered, may still be alive. The town's chief of police, Levon Brooks, offers comfort and friendship and the two soon grow fond of each other, but Pam's intentions come into question as other dead bodies begin to turn up in the quiet town of Crystal Lake. Levon asks his sister, Briana, a journalist, to dig into these unusual deaths using her resources. What begins as a modest pursuit grows into something far beyond anyone's reckoning. Meanwhile, Pam's dark past comes back to haunt her, forcing her to fight for her very survival and eventually setting off a chain of events that slowly transforms her into the rampaging killer we know from "Friday the 13th."

Critics Consensus

Linda Cardellini plays the perfect mom who can do no wrong in this slasher prequel that lives up to the best and worst of its franchise's ilk, but since mother knows best, Crystal Lake is a campy, gory, good time.

While not without merit, “Crystal Lake” is too often stuck in the shadow of its franchise elephant for it to succeed on its own terms.

In giving Pam Voorhees a distressing backstory that spins its wheels, Crystal Lake successfully deepens the character but messes with the franchise’s mythology. But it's anchored by Linda Cardellini's exceptional—and exceptionally gonzo—lead performance.

What's waiting isn’t exactly mind-blowing, and I suspect franchise die-hards will be happier being left to their collective, unlimited imaginations.

I love what Linda Cardellini does here, who's not holding back and going wild. The series goes to some strange and unusual places that are a lot of fun.

Just like Jason, Crystal Lake is a little malformed and neglected, but it’s capable of greatness and defying expectations if it’s given a chance. It’s a satisfying step forward for the Friday the 13th franchise after nearly two decades of standstill.

Thanks to Linda Cardellini’s spectacular lead performance, the high body count, and a pivotal conclusion, this first season of Crystal Lake shapes up as a flawed yet ultimately satisfying debut with a unique take on the franchise.
