Critics Consensus

Nail-bitingly tense and brilliantly acted, Wait Until Dark is a compact thriller that makes the most of its fiendishly clever premise.

This 1967 thriller draws its effectiveness less from the intelligence of the direction (by Terence Young) than from the unbridled sadism of the concept. Go to Full Review Eric Henderson Slant Magazine Aug 11, 2003
Wait Until Dark, Frederick Knott's gimmicky stage play about a blind woman terrorized by crooks, was brought to the screen in 1967 and was accompanied by an even more outlandish gimmick. Go to Full Review Rachel Wagner Rachel's Reviews (YouTube) Nov 6, 2025
It's really fun. Has the best jump scare in all of movies. Go to Full Review Trace Thurman Horror Queers Podcast May 13, 2024

Terence Young's claustrophobic thriller is as tense as can be thanks to a terrifying performance from Alan Arkin. Go to Full Review Joe Lipsett Horror Queers Podcast May 8, 2024

Audrey Hepburn may have "cripped" up for her Oscar nominated role, but Suzy is still a great character. It's Arkin who steals the show as the slick villain, though, and that iconic jump scare remains every bit as effective now as it was in 1967. Go to Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Dec 30, 2022

B P @Bradster69 Sep 7, 2026 Definitely Recommend It See more Luca D. @JoeCamel7 May 25, 2026 In terms of plot and suspense, it's really great, and most of the acting is too, that is until we get to Hepburn's performance. I can't understand the hype around her acting in this movie, it literally drags the movie down for me. Every scene is riveting and intense, and then there's Hepburn giving a sigh, and a cry, every ten minutes, just like in any B grade film noir from the 1930s-60s. Like is sighing and bellowing considered outstanding acting? If anything Arkin and Crenna kept the movie afloat, along with the outstanding plot, cinematography, and soundtrack. Hepburn's soapy performance kind of killed the movie for me. If you are interested in suspenseful films, this is a good example of how to build and maintain suspense, just don't expect any top class acting lessons from this one. -side note, she never thought once to lock her door???- See more Kristofer K @kbkaizer May 15, 2026 Textbook classic showcasing how to sustain tension, suspense, and keep a story moving with most of the story happening in a single location.
