Henry D @Henry_Domke Aug 31, 2026 As major tree lovers, we should have appreciated this film. However, it was excessively sentimental in ways that felt false. Despite some good sections, there was too much time on minor stories. It would have been better if half had been edited out. See more BILL M @RT02553490 Dec 31, 2023 This movie is really about how trees are "useful" to people, as well as a hagiography to Weyerhauser. Far from being inspired by "The Overstory", it is almost devoid of either the science of trees, or the feelings people have as the great forests are being destroyed. Sure, lots of shots of miles of felled trees, but then we learn that hey, Weyerhauser has planted 2 billion trees. We even meet the ex-hippies that planted alot of them. What we don't learn is that by planting them as mono-crops, they are destroying what was once a diverse ecosystem, and merely delaying the inevitable environmental collapse and the soil gets depleted. There is no spirit of investigation, of challenging power (so central to "The Overstory"), and for a film set in the Pacific Northwest, not a word about Native Americans! See more Christopher M @RT48186289 Dec 22, 2023 a nice mellow documentary about trees and deforestation. A nice and engaging documentary. See more hardy c @hardy00 Dec 19, 2023 This is a curious documentary. It has plenty of wonderful images of trees and forests. It also has a lot of people with varying relationships with trees. But the whole seems less than the sum of the parts. Yes the bonzai specialist with the psychotic bonzai-killing ex-wife/ex-girlfriend is an interesting person, as is the photographer dedicated to finding exotic trees worldwide and the 95 year old George Weyerhaeuser who was kidnapped as a nine year old and the 76 year old tree planter who built an international tree planting company. But what does all this mean? The doc fails to really integrate these various tree-experiences into a holistic "Grand Meaning." I came away liking trees as much as I did before watching this but cannot say I am more enlightened. A great documentary for tree lovers. See more Read all reviews
