Media mogul Elliot Carver (Jonathan Pryce) wants his news empire to reach every country on the globe, but the Chinese government will not allow him to broadcast there. Carver doesn't take no for an answer and plans to use his media empire to fuel flames of war between the Western world and China. Thankfully, James Bond (Pierce Brosnan) is on to the insane news tycoon and travels to China to stop him with the help of Chinese secret agent Wai Lin (Michelle Yeoh).

A competent, if sometimes by-the-numbers entry to the 007 franchise, Tomorrow Never Dies may not boast the most original plot but its action sequences are genuinely thrilling.

After weeks of media bombardment with Tomorrow Never Dies product tie-in commercials, it's clear that the studio and the film's producers have reinvented movie promotion. Now they need to focus their efforts on reinventing the Bond movies.

Jonathan Pryce finalmente eleva un po' il concetto di villain con un personaggio peculiare e che differisce leggermente dai suoi predecessori per modi e mezzi utilizzati per uno scopo sempre vicino alla guerra e distruzione. Ambientazioni e trama interessanti forse ad eccezione del finale poco credibile in cui il grande capo si trova esattamente dove il delitto viene compiuto, cosa che stride molto con la lungimiranza delle sue idee. Brosnan probabilmente al top come Bond in un progetto calzante.

While the heavier emphasis on action will cause some to understandably see this film as a step down from GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies is still a fun entry in the James Bond franchise in its own right. The action sequences are thrilling, the characters are memorable and the rise of fake news in the mid-2010's make the plot and Big Bad a satire that were ahead of their time compared to their dismissal as cartoonish back in 1997. Also, the theme song and opening credits sequence are underrated. Maybe the latter is a bit creepy thanks to some outdated CGI but I do think it fits with this film's story. A fun popcorn-friendly flick with a Bond Girl whom I'm bummed never got her own spinoff.

The... Bond series does seem to specialise in having titles, which sound proverbial, which I have never heard used. So. And, this was mori-bond! sorry. Agony, really.

Another reworking of the You Only Live Twice/The Spy Who Loved Me template. This time its the evil media trying to create a war for ratings! Clearly was a huge mess behind the scenes but its still quite fun in enough ways (great supporting cast that includes Ricky Jay and Vincent Schiavelli).
