What Worked: Samul’s neon lighting gives the dark trailer park a chaotic texture I totally dug. The pool sequence is fantastic, blending a brutal struggle with upbeat 80s pop for a jarring contrast. Through my Methodist faith lens, seeing this fractured family selflessly sacrifice for each other beautifully reminded me how crisis forces us to rely on unconditional love and grace. The Cuts: The middle part really dragged for me because the family makes terrible, cliché decisions. Leaning hard into campy tropes gave me total tonal whiplash, totally abandoning the original’s realistic dread. Keeping it spoiler-free, the early dialogue feels super forced while we just spin our wheels waiting for the horror to kick in. Verdict: An 80s slasher homage that loses the original’s creepy magic. Okay for mindless chases, but skip if you loved the first film's grounded tension. This just seems like another in a long line of dime a dozen psycho slasher movies. The fact that there are three psycho slashers is a little unique, but not enough to recommend. By the way, what happened to the gun? The victims had a gun, then one second later they didn't have a gun. Huh? The movies try very hard to copy the aesthetic and tension of classic slasher films, but instead of feeling gritty or authentic, they come off as slow, empty, and artificial. There is barely any real plot, character development, or meaningful tension. Most of the runtime is filled with characters making unbelievably dumb decisions while the story crawls forward at an exhausting pace. Horror classics like Halloween, Friday the 13th, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and Scream had characters and atmosphere that still feel real decades later. The Strangers movies feel like they’re trying to imitate those vibes without understanding what made them work in the first place. It feels like the audience has simply lost time they could have spent watching far better horror films.
