David W @RT35815822 Aug 9 I personally thought this was a great movie. It was a little slow at times, but I really like the plot and the ending. I mean, what really do you want more out of a movie besides a good plot and a good ending?! In my opinion, the only people that wouldn’t like this movie are the ones that don’t believe in life after death. Picked up what was missed the 1st time around, very glad i did. This movie went from being ok to Great. Well acted, the writing of this was done well, had some good themes. I am not the most poetic in my writing (apologies for that) and everyone's opinions are helpful on this platform and I certainly don't want to come across at patronizing, that is not my aim. Also, I am not going to describe this film or decode it, it just needs to be watched. I will say this - I am a better person for watching this film. It is deep, poetic, transformative, dark and beautiful. Films, books and music are what the watcher/reader/listener makes of them and for them to take away what they need from it. I guess, looking at the reviews, some people miss the complexities, fragility and beauty of life that this film allows us to see, if we're willing to look. Perhaps we all need to look a little deeper. I love this film. See more John B @RT30266910 Jan 9 While many critics call it boring and corny, I found it to be a moving exploration of adult themes such as marriage and mortality. The acting is superb all around. Have watched it twice and will do so again somewhere down the road. Very underappreciated and misunderstood film. He sees a man named Takumi Nakamura (Ken Watanabe) lost in the forest and trying to leave the place. Nakamura tells him that he was demoted at work and decided to end his life cutting his wrists two days ago, but he regretted it since he missed his wife and daughter. Arthur decides to help Nakamura to find the trail to exit from the forest and they tell each other parts of their lives. In flashbacks, Arthur and his wife, the alcoholic realtor Joan Brennan (Naomi Watts), have a troubled marriage since Arthur had betrayed her with a co-worker. When Joan has a nosebleed, she learns that she has a brain tumor and needs risky surgery. They rekindle their love and after the successful surgery, they learn that it is not a malignant tumor. When the ambulance is heading to a hospital with Joan for her recovery, Arthur follows the ambulance with his car and tells her that he does not know her favorite color or season. Before her answer, a truck crashes the ambulance and kills Joan. Meanwhile, Nakamura tells Arthur that the names of his wife and daughter are "Kiiro" and "Fuyu", respectively. Will they survive? “The Sea of Trees” (2015) is a nice movie by Gus Van Sant, with the story of a grieving professor who travels to Japan to end his life at the Suicide Forest Aokigahara. This forest is referred usually in Japanese horror movies, but Gus Van Sant uses the spot in a depressive and dramatic film. The cast is excellent, with Matthew McConaughey, Ken Watanabe and Naomi Watts, but the unpleasant story does not help much. Anyway, for fans of Gus Van Sant is worthwhile watching to know the work of this director. My vote is six.
