At the dawn of the 20th century, British explorer Percy Fawcett journeys into the Amazon, where he discovers evidence of a previously unknown, advanced civilization that may have once inhabited the region. Despite being ridiculed by the scientific establishment, which views indigenous populations as savages, the determined Fawcett, supported by his devoted wife, son, and aide-de-camp, returns to his beloved jungle in an attempt to prove his case.

It has to move you, not bore you. If a film can’t achieve that quickened pulse or heavy heart, it’s little better than a travelogue on cable television or a curriculum video they show soon-to-be-bored high school students in Social Studies class.

Perhaps it's the film's jungle setting that matches James Gray's meandering tone; the film deals with doubt and uncertainty, and the sense of feeling lost in time amidst the smoky jungle landscapes feels complimentary rather than contradictory.

I went into this movie not knowing what to expect. I found this movie to be stunning to watch visually. I enjoyed the story of explorers mapping uncharted territory in South America. Very well acted and compelling to watch.

It’s hard to believe the low ratings by some people for this movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it ,as it harks back to a time when movies were sumptuous, and the dialogue and acting were as important as the action. Probably showing my age , but i can understand the younger generation would find this not to their taste. It’s certainly no Indiana Jones model.. but more restrained and thoughtful and beautifully shot. The fact it is a true story makes it even more poignant. A feast for mature movie buffs.

The movie adaptation of the David Grann book, The Lost City of Z, bites off more than it can chew. While Percy Fawcett was a trailblazing explorer and honorable soldier he ultimately abandoned his wife and children, and in so sacrificing his oldest son to the jungle in satisfaction of his ego and blind obsessions. It’s a story of a man with a lifelong chip on his shoulder who places self aggrandizement over family. The movie dispels with all but the most obvious Amazonian “green hell”jungle hazards thereby losing texture of the central theme of the movie.
