In the early 1970s, American expatriate Donald Richie documented his adventures along Japan's western coast in his classic travelogue "The Inland Sea." Decades later, filmmaker Lucille Carra, using material from Richie's book as a point of departure, provides impressions of the vanishing culture of rural Japan. Combining sequences of forgotten off-coast islands with interviews of local fisherman and merchants, Carra creates a vision of Japan at odds with its reputation for modernity.
