The camera work, editing, and color grading are all top tier. Not every time you get this perfection. This is truly special. But this film—the narrative, the plot, the characters, the music, the script, the mise-en-scène—everything feels as if this story couldn't be told any other way, as if the hotel itself were an aesthetic. Fiennes and his character carry the film amazingly. It feels as if he were the embodiment of the hotel. The meta-literary interplay—a story within a story—is incredibly creative. Although I initially thought it might be pretentious, the truth is that it plays with the senses while developing human emotions that add complexity to the characters. It doesn't feel like a fairy tale; it feels like a real, relatable story: a hidden past, an undeserved legacy, a questionable employee... everything comes together dramatically. As per usual, a dynamic and clever plot supported by witty dialogues and an extremely good long list of actors and actresses. I imagined that coming across such a beautiful building, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Wes couldn't avoid the temptation of a story imagining its history, life and death. A must see indeed!
