Years ago, Barney Ross co-founded the Expendables with Conrad Stonebanks. After Stonebanks became an arms dealer, Ross was forced to kill him -- or so he thought. Now, Stonebanks is back, and he's on a mission to end the Expendables. Ross decides that the way to fight old blood is with new blood, so he assembles a team of younger, faster, more tech-savvy recruits. The battle to topple Stonebanks becomes a clash of old-school methods vs. high-tech expertise.

Critics Consensus

Like its predecessors, Expendables 3 offers a modicum of all-star thrills for old-school action thriller aficionados -- but given all the talent assembled, it should have been a lot more fun.

The movie borrows so liberally from other action films that it starts to feel at times a bit like a BuzzFeed listicle.

Yes, it's pretty much the same mixture as before, but slicker and more polished, and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.

“The Expendables 3” lacks the fun, the excitement, and the charm that the franchise built itself on.

It’s not a pretty one, but the third film, for the most part, departs from the hearty rerun missions of the first two films.

Unbelievably awful. It's almost as if a vial of testosterone came to life and made a movie, except that movie would probably have been better than this thing I just watched.

The Expendables 3 has its moments, especially when the new additions bring fresh energy. Harrison Ford fits surprisingly well into this world, giving the movie a different veteran presence after Bruce Willis’ exit. Mel Gibson is even stronger as Stonebanks, bringing bitterness, instability, and a personal history with Barney that makes him one of the franchise’s better villains. Antonio Banderas is also a lot of fun as Galgo. His nonstop talking and desperate need to join the team could have been annoying, but he gives the movie a badly needed burst of comic personality. The final battle has scale, with old and new teams, tanks, helicopters, explosions, and waves of enemies creating the action-toy-box feel the series wants. The problem is that the PG-13 rating waters down the impact, and the younger team is not memorable enough to justify taking time away from the older cast. The movie has things to appreciate, but it feels overstuffed and diluted.

Enjoyable, I’ve watched this one a few times. Start to finish since it’s Theater release. I’m not a Hollywood expert, but when you have a successful trilogy or franchise within a film, you don’t go from a consistent R rating to PG-13. Just takes away too much of what you expect. Still a really fun film though.

Not really suspenseful or heart pounding. These once healthy and strong actors are really pushing their physical limits and their bodies show it.

I don’t know why this movie gets so low a rating, I think its probably the best of the 3.
