Brandon H @Wonka81 Apr 7 Beautifully done! Exquisite acting by Robert Duvall and the whole cast. One of the most interesting scenes is where Mac lies to his daughter about remembering a lullaby he used to sing to her. It was as if he were afraid of the close moment they could have shared if he had been honest and told her he remembered the lullaby. Such understated performances by all including Allan Hubbard whom was so believable as a little boy moving through life without his bio dad whom died so young he has no memories of him. Duvall deserved the Oscar also the song "Over you" was well written catchy. This is a short sweet film. It is a flawless, nuanced, lived in, subtle work of pure craftsmanship. Tess Harper is also outstanding and the cast is perfect. The writing here is wise, smart, haunting, beautiful and the music is glorious. Bruce Beresford has directed a lived-in emotional masterpiece. Of course from a much simpler time but it is very well done from many perspectives. The characters are very believable and even sensible for the most part. The story of a reformed alcoholic songwriter/singer who lucks into something worth changing for. Inspiring without being over the top at all. Expecting a crescendo of doom, we’re finally confronted with some underwhelming sadness and the kitsch easy finale of a reformed character. Wet acting from the ex wife and child star (not by any means a star), help set the scene. All too predictable and all too boring, this was a real disappointment of a Best Picture nominee.
