What to Know

Critics Consensus

It may evoke memories of classic summer blockbusters a little too eagerly for some, but Super 8 has thrills, visual dazzle, and emotional depth to spare.

It's a by-the-numbers blockbuster, but one with a key element that's missing from most of the big-budget bloatfests crowding each other for space on the marquee every summer: heart. Go to Full Review

While it may not achieve the level of pop culture canonization as the Spielberg films it invokes, Super 8 should inspire many to use their camera-phones for something more creative than a profile pic. Go to Full Review

It is a "perfect movie" because it can be rewatched without ever losing its feeling of freshness and wonder, and because there are no flaws that retroactively diminish the experience. Go to Full Review

What can be said is how sharply calculated "Super 8" is as an amalgamation of what both Spielberg and Abrams separately do best. Go to Full Review

Matthew D @OceanSage 1d A refreshing nostalgic look back at Summer science fiction. Director J.J. Abrams’ sci-fi coming of age picture Super 8 (2011) is a delightful throw back before Stranger Things ever endeared itself to audiences everywhere. Drawing inspiration from Richard Donner’s The Goonies, Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, as well as Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Abrams finds himself directing his greatest film with Super 8. Set during the end of the hippie era going into the 1980’s synth world, Abrams harks back to an older America many have nostalgia for with detailed props, signs, music, clothes, slang, and buildings. Michael Giacchino’s score is rousing with inspired melodies to lift your spirits. He does not quite match John Williams’ iconic score for E.T. that Giacchino’s clearly going for, Super 8’s music is pretty enough to stir emotions. See more Peter F @pfiggs71 Aug 8 Super 8 is like a cross between The Goonies and X-Files! It's has old school thrills along with a good dose of Sci-Fi and a thread of an emotional story line that pulls at your heart strings. I've watched this movie many times over the years and it still satisfies!! I highly recommend this movie. See more Shelby Q @ShelbyLynn Jul 16 One of my favorite movies and severely underrated in my book. I hope that in years to come. This will become a cult classic, and people start watching It more. It definitely didn't get the credit that it deserves. Abrams is a genius. These kids did amazing. It's a well-thought-out story. See more Kristen S @Rocketeer90 Jul 12 This is still one of my favorite movies. It has a wonderful mystery, danger, kids being hero’s and lots of heart. I am so bummed it never became popular because it’s so underrated. It also gave the creators of Stranger Things a lot of ideas because this movie is a lot like it. I would not call it a rip off but it’s so similar at times there is no way this movie was not an inspiration for that show. See more David S @IH8Phags69 Jul 4 This was a bloated piece of garbage with no real plot or interesting storyline!
