The filmmakers arrive with big plans, impossible deadlines, and the usual confidence of people who believe problems can be solved with enough charm and a larger budget. Naturally, everything goes wonderfully wrong. The cast is a perfectly tuned comedy machine. William H. Macy brings his trademark anxious intensity to a writer trying to protect his vision from a thousand distractions, while Philip Seymour Hoffman delivers a brilliant performance as a director caught between artistic ideals and practical disasters. Alec Baldwin, Sarah Jessica Parker, David Paymer, and the entire ensemble add layers of personality, creating a world where everyone is flawed, ambitious, and hilariously human. Joe and his girlfriend’s relationship is entirely based upon the fact they are pretty much the only good people lol. I liked how wholesome their story was, and how the production of the film was the opposite. 4/5 stars.
