The Enterprise and its crew follow a Borg ship through a time warp to prevent the Borg from taking over the Earth in a past era. Star Trek: First Contact is The Next Generation’s first solo film flight, and they handle the voyage pretty well. The Borg, after all, are terrifying villains, which makes for some suspenseful moments on the ship. The parts on the planet below, however, aren’t as compelling, and the attempts to bring comic relief to the story don’t always work. The practical and visual effects hold up surprisingly well, though, and I did find myself wondering how the crew would get out of the situation they were in. I guess you could say that my initial encounter with Star Trek: First Contact was satisfactory.

Absolutely my favorite Star Trek movie. It takes on the position of being the first Star Trek movie with the Next Generation crew solving their own conflict as they take on the Borg, the arch nemesis from the TV Series. Of course, this movie escapes a lot of the heavy weight of heavy-handed philosophy and speaks to one of the more revered themes... Revenge, and where that road could lead us. Loyalty and friendship can save the day, the greatest day in our history... our future.
