Teaming Bond up with a spy from the other side is an incredible idea and the Lotus Esprit is my favorite Bond gadget car. Unfortunately, the film still collapses under shallow writing. The villain is "evil because evil," killing allies just to look ruthless, which makes the whole scheme feel irrational. Bond’s romance scenes are not only dated, they are badly written and take up too much space, and he keeps getting caught, killing any sense of competence. The hand to hand action is faster than earlier entries but still unconvincing, with sped up footage that looks silly. Jaws comes off more cartoonish than threatening. Perhaps the most exciting character is the wordless, Frankenstein-like monster called Jaws, underlining that plot and characters remain rather lacklustre and uninteresting. Barbara Bach's character in particular, who is supposed to be a fairly strong and intelligent figure, remains a wasted opportunity. She is a pushover and another damsel in distress who ends up succumbing to Bond's charms. Regardless of the fact that he is the murderer of her lover, three weeks later she cannot resist the allure and attraction that Bond signifies. In essence, this is the film's strongest message: in the midst of Anglo-Soviet peace efforts, Bond is the figure who seals the "partnership deal" by "'conquering"' the Soviet spy.
