Critics Consensus

Split serves as a dramatic tour de force for James McAvoy in multiple roles -- and finds writer-director M. Night Shyamalan returning resoundingly to thrilling form.

This is still not mint-condition Shyamalan, but he's heading in the right direction, with some help from McAvoy, who gives Kevin-and 23 other characters-all that he's got.

The way that Shyamalan and Gioulakis emphasize close-ups and medium shots make for a taut, clean forcefulness that...give Split a leaner, hipper feel very different from the increasingly aestheticized studio polish of Shyamalan's earlier work.

Split is an extremely distinguished variety of lurid B-movie pulp, and it’s absolutely the best Shyamalan movie since Unbreakable.

Is this a dangerous representation of DID? Possibly, but McAvoy's performance as the different personalities, M. Night and Gioulakis' cinematography and the secret tie-in to Unbreakable make this a lurid delight

Split would be an amazing film that could stand on its own even if it ended one minute sooner than it did.

Worst movie ever. Idk, I hate you all for these reviews. This was a comedy. If anything. A bad one, at that. Whatever James got paid, it wasn’t enough. Who gives this anything other than MAYBE 1 star? This is ridiculous.

Interesting alteration concept. McAvoy is really impressive. Taylor-Joy also shines. Just the right amount of thrill from Shyamalan.

SPOILER ALERT! This film is usually watched through two lenses. The first is the movie minus the last two minutes, where the audience expects an horror movie with a good cast and director that persuades the audience to watch it, and that's what they get. The second lens is the movie as a whole, being by nature a sequel to "Unbreakable". Here, the audience views what they have just watched entirely differently, seeing the connections between super powered beings among the population that stay hidden in plain sight. Similar yet in contrast to Unbreakable, this film sets up the villain of Shyamalan's universe, reserving only 10-15ish minutes of the film for the antagonist's true power. And I suppose through a third lens one might watch this after watching the trilogy's conclusion "Glass", spotting all of the clues in this film that link the origin of the Beast, interferences of Mr Glass and persuasions of Unbreakable. But back to the film as a whole; great cast, insane acting, 10/10!
