Simon (Théodore Pellerin) is a rising star in Montreal's drag scene performing lively disco pop numbers weekly at his local club. Friendly with his fellow drag queens and supported by his sister, who delights in designing increasingly elaborate and beautiful costumes for his act, Simon vibrates with the passion of his adopted artistic community. When he meets Oliver (Félix Maritaud), the alluring new recruit at the club, their irresistible chemistry sparks an electric romance and a fulfilling creative collaboration. Their dynamic is mesmerizing and tender until Oliver's dominant instincts and destructive behavior jeopardize Simon's space in the spotlight. Simon has plenty of experience with tempestuous personalities -- his mother, a bona fide opera diva, is back in his life after years on the road -- but can he get out from under the shadow of their influence? Beautifully charting the highs and lows of falling in love and finding oneself in one's art, writer and director Sophie Dupuis's SOLO is a passionate feat of character-driven storytelling and visual extravagance, celebrating the drag world in all its splendor and heartache.

It’s an uncomfortable watch at times: sharply written and compellingly acted, Simon’s fracturing sense of self and disintegrating confidence is heartbreaking to behold. Go to Full Review Todd Gilchrist Variety Jun 14, 2024
“Solo” both honors and transcends its subject matter in its widely evocative, deeply affecting character study — while also happening to have an absolutely banging soundtrack. Go to Full Review Randy Myers San Jose Mercury News Jun 6, 2024

“Solo” avoids tired tropes and celebrates drag itself (the scenes of both stars performing are outstanding) and those who step out on the stage while dealing with their own struggles and desires. Go to Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com Oct 29, 2025

…while writer and director Sophie Dupuis is dealing with serious issues here, there’s a party going on at the same time... these parallel strands of personal trauma and outwards exuberance give Solo a welcome and unique flavour that’s anything but a drag. Whilst Dupuis’ third feature doesn’t reach its full potential, Solo is still worth watching. Pellerin is a star in the making, and Dupuis certainly has a strong visual eye. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Barbara Jun 3, 2024 In SOLO, Thodore Pellerin gives the best performance of 2024 so far. See more May 18, 2024 Mental illness film See more John S @RT61594807 Dec 28, 2023 Booooring. The main character is a doormat mama's boy, from beginning to end—supposedly he comes into his own but there is no evidence of it. His love interest is purely toxic, so what is the point? There is no moral ambiguity, no insights, nothing. Dialogue is purely functional. Everything said is soooo literal. Like watching a soap opera mashed up with Flashdance. See more Read all reviews
