The story, design, and Danny Elfman's score make it a timeless Halloween classic. It's a classic whodunit: Ichabod Crane investigates small town murders, leading to the legend of the Headless Horseman. Tim Burton's style makes the mystery stand out, especially as we wonder if the Horseman is real. For a rated R Burton film, there's plenty of blood and decapitations, all looking great on screen. The pumpkin and iconic tree scenes are memorable, as is the church scene. The huge cast all does a wonderful job. Johnny Depp is perfect as the quirky, easily startled Crane. The Gothic look is fantastic, and the town feels authentic and lived in. The Horseman looks great, too, with his wild sword swinging. Elfman's score brings the creepy mystery to life. The ending uses a clichéd whodunit reveal, with the mastermind explaining everything, but it feels necessary. I look forward to watching it every October.
