Naomi V @RT77991702 Jul 4 Side Effects is a clever, well-paced psychological thriller with strong direction, sharp writing, and an engaging mystery that keeps you invested from beginning to end. I also appreciated how it explores the complicated relationship between the pharmaceutical industry, psychiatry, and the justice system. A few moments that require a suspension of disbelief, a psychiatrist publicly identifying someone as a patient would be a major breach of confidentiality, and among other things. The first time I saw this movie, I’d given it around a 4.8. Watching it again decades later, I wasn’t quite as impressed. The plot feels a little more neatly wrapped up than I remembered, and some of the twists come across as more cliché and trope-heavy on a second viewing, still very entertaining, intelligent thriller with good performances, strong cinematography, and a satisfying story. It started very strongly, and throughout, the consistency of acting quality was very solid. But the story just went all over the place, completely changing the entire movie's genre. (SPOILER: there’s no way she gets released completely for that crime, even under doc supervision, just because she entrapped her co-conspirator).
