Sur un ton plutôt mélancolique sans non plus tomber dans la parodie indie, Shopgirl est une belle et émouvante histoire d'émancipation, portée par un excellent Steve Martin qui écrit aussi le scénario issu de sa propre nouvelle. Anand Tucker n'est pas le plus grand réalisateur du monde, mais il trouve quelques idées sympathiques de mise en scène, faisant de Shopgirl un vrai bon moment reposant.
