Mission Commander Kate Bowman is the pilot and commander of the most important mission of the 21st century: saving the human race. Establishes an amusingly nasty pecking order once it reaches the surface and even morphs into "Predator" for a hot minute. But it generally bears the anonymous aesthetics of an assembly-line product and is the uglier of 2000's dueling Mars films.

There are plenty of elements to the story, and it even manages to throw in a shipboard romance before the credits roll. But more plot frippery does make for a more hospitable Red Planet.

I am generally a sceptical and negative reviewer but this movie was better than I thought it would be after reading some of the bad RT reviews. The stages, scenery, script, CGI and acting was good. The photography depicting the Martian surface was realistic although in one scene I did see some flat cumulus clouds in the distance. The idea and depiction of the Mars atmosphere was ridiculous for anyone who know knows something about astronomy and physics, although necessary to make this script work.

OMG! What a load of unspectacular drivel! Even such a great cast could not bring this asinine script to life. Every sci-fi cliche brought to bear could not resurrect it. At least if it was trying to take a poke at the genre, it might have been watchable. Don't waste your time.

Part of the late '90s/early 2000s sci-fi craze, Red Planet feels slapped together in every aspect. The CGI has aged terribly, the script is pretty much useless and the characters are as deep as puddles of water. There are sparks here and there that could have been developed into a decent story, but I guess nobody cared enough.
