A gently humanist story of the American West from Max Walker-Silverman (A Love Song), Rebuilding follows Dusty (Josh O'Connor), a reserved, divorced father whose ranch has burned down in a devastating wildfire. Now living in a trailer community on a government-run campsite, Dusty finds solace with his new neighbors who have also lost everything, quietly reassembles his life, and starts reconnecting with his ex-wife Ruby (Meghann Fahy) and young daughter Callie-Rose (Lily LaTorre). Filmed against the rapturous backdrop of southern Colorado, Rebuilding is a ruminative, moving portrait of resilience and human connection in the wake of loss.

It’s a definitive “we the people” movie filled with gorgeous vistas, crepuscular landscapes, authentic people and a deeply moving sense of everything that’s best about the US at a time when it needs it most. Go to Full Review

Rebuilding can have many meanings. Again, put like that it might seem trite, but director Max Walker-Silverman’s work is never less than gossamer subtle and starkly honest. O’Connor is terrific. LaTorre likewise. Go to Full Review

The film’s most fundamental flaw is its inoffensive, overall unchallenging pleasantness, both in the rather generic story of Dusty bonding with his daughter and one too many shots of him staring morosely out over the Colorado mountains. Go to Full Review

Anchored by a wonderfully open-handed performance by Josh O'Connor, the film is written and directed skilfully by Max Walker-Silverman to find wider resonance in earthy humour and astute observations. Go to Full Review

It’s a film that could easily have got bogged down in sadness, but Rebuilding is more interested in the resilience of its land and its people, and in lighting a path through tough times. Go to Full Review

Compassion for a very hard time See more Stephen T Nov 25 such a thoughtful, beautifully constructed story about a guy just trying to get by in the face of life. great casting. as much is said in the silences as in the dialogue. See more Thomas M Nov 21 a powerful, quiet slice of life film. Josh O'Connor gives a magnificent, nuanced performance as a rancher fallen on hard times. the cinematography and music are stella. Solidarity confronting the stark reality of the limits of FOMA and of what institutions can do for them. All that around a touching story of a Dad trying to keep his head above water and not run off to Montana, but stay close to his daughter as he figures out how to rebuild his life. A smaller production that is slow moving, filled with some silences and with some moody, therefore very appropriate, soundtrack. See more Read all reviews
