I've never fully understood the power of Denzel Washington until seeing this film. I've always known of Tom Hanks' acting chops, but Denzel really goes toe to toe with him in this movie. The story illustrated in this film is tragic (not only the disease but the treatment of society). I found myself caring deeply for what happened to Andy. The verdict kind of snuck up on me. I thought there might be a bit more in the courtroom or deliberations. That being said, this is still a great movie with incredible performances all around. Best Character: Joe Miller (honorable mention to Andy's partner, Miguel) Best Quote: "With all due respect, your honor, we don't live in this courtroom, do we?" - Joe Best Scene: The Halloween Party Best Piece of Score: "Precedent" Best Song: "Streets of Philadelphia" See more Ian W. @iwaldman Jun 21 I’ve seen some describe this movie as a LGBTQ+ movie made for a straight audience. Although I think that may be partially true, I don’t think that takes away from its impact or is necessarily a critique of the film. When you look at when this film was released, it speaks even more to how important and necessary it was. Would there be different casting decisions today? Absolutely, but I thought Tom Hanks was terrific and gave a heartbreaking performance. Denzel Washington was also great. His character was far from perfect, but I loved how we were able to watch his growth in real time. I miss films like this, where it has a feeling of everyday life to it. With the film being called ‘Philadelphia’ it was nice that it actually felt like we were living in Philadelphia for a short while. The atmosphere was palpable, both geographically and culturally.
