When shady circus magician Oscar Diggs (James Franco) is hurled away from Kansas into the wonderful land of Oz, he thinks that fame and fortune are his for the taking. However, three witches -- Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams) -- remain unconvinced that Oscar is the great wizard that the inhabitants of Oz need and expect. Reluctantly drawn into Oz's epic problems, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it's too late.

Critics Consensus

It suffers from some tonal inconsistency and a deflated sense of wonder, but Oz the Great and Powerful still packs enough visual dazzle and clever wit to be entertaining in its own right.

Make no mistake, Oz the Great & Powerful a beautiful film... But any true weight of vacancy rests in the script itself - and no feats of acting could have fundamentally changed this trap.

3/5

With flying monkeys, Yellow Brick Road and sequin-spangled witches all faithfully reproduced, it's impossible to see this as a standalone film, given it looks like an HD colouring book version of the original movie.

The twister that comes to whirl Oscar into Oz is so preordained you could find its departure information and flight time from an airport travel board.

A portrait of plasticity that could have benefited from more intelligence in its narrative structure, more feeling in its characterizations, and more courage to break away from the generic, one-size-fits-all strain of blockbuster.

I am so sad that they will not be able to continue making these due to events in the lives of the actors. I loved what they were doing with it.

Brilliant. Wonderous, fascinating and bewitching. Well written with lots of wit and color. Great cinematography adds to the mystical and magical. Whole cast excels in character. Filled with fun, all things Oz, emotion, intrigue and enough suspense. Entertaining and captivating - also it gives new insight into "fake it until you make it" 😜

A playful and colourful journey through a familiar land, which tells us a prequel story to the popular and iconic original. But one needs suspension of disbelief at times.

terrible!!! every female character was in love with the wizard somehow and it was annoying. it felt like this movie had nothing to do with the wizard of oz. i cant imagine dorothy coming to this version of oz because its so far removed. glinda had NO pink!! and i wanted that stupid monkey to DIE in conclusion. BOOOOO IT STINKS BOO
