Following the sudden death of her best friend, Debbie, Laine finds an antique Ouija board in Debbie's room and tries to use it to say goodbye. Instead, she makes contact with a spirit that calls itself DZ. As strange events begin to occur, Laine enlists others to help her determine DZ's identity and what it wants. As the friends delve deeper, they find that Debbie's mysterious death was not unique, and that they will suffer the same fate unless they learn how to close the portal they've opened.

Critics Consensus

Slowly, steadily, although no one seems to be moving it in that direction, the Ouija planchette points to NO.

While the rote screenwriting doesn't kill the dark spirit of the world's creepiest board game, it doesn't channel it, either.

Ouija is a low grade, low impact, Final Destination-style horror rip-off.

The bumps and thumps are mechanical, the young stars insipid and the otherworldly entity the kids contact is called Doris.

While this film teases its viewer with some slightly eerie moments and sudden scares, the majority fall flat and cheap.

Ouija commits the crime of taking itself too seriously while also being an incredible bore.

Man this was terrible. Boring plot, bad dialogue, actors who don't care to be there (I don't blame them), and incredibly generic. Not even so bad where it's laughable at least. It's just mindnumbing and a waste of time.

Oh boy, this movie is bad. And I don’t mean “yeah it was bad but it was still a good time.” No. It’s just BAD. The whole thing feels like a bad ripoff of The Ring from 2002, with the Ouija board itself essentially being the cursed videotape. The acting isn’t very good, it’s not written very well, and it’s just straight up boring. None of the jumpscares were even remotely good, and I found the entity our main characters face to be quite lackluster and boring. The only, only redeeming quality of this movie is the fact that Lin Shaye is in here, but that doesn’t save this movie. If anything, she’s too good for this movie! In my opinion, you’ll be saving yourself a lot of time and pain if you just skip this movie. I’m sure you can find a much better movie with a similar runtime to Ouija, so just watch that instead.

my favorite film genre is terrible horror, i find that even if you seek out the worst, you can still find something entertaining in it all. this movie however, wasn't entertaining in the slightest. the plot was painfully generic and half the lines were so predictable i could quote the movie almost 1-1 on my first watch. this movie tries so hard to be something, but it falls flat on every single attempt.
