Rachel Pronger Sight & Sound Nov 5, 2025
Carreira’s scrupulously low-key debut feature is primarily an exploration of the cost of unfettered consumerism, a chilling exposé disguised as social realist drama. Go to Full Review

The mood in On Falling is a shade of blue, precisely rendered in small gestures and fleeting moments. As Aurora drifts into ever deeper solitude, the film has the economy of a haiku. Go to Full Review

This terrific English-language feature debut from Portuguese-born, Scotland-based director Laura Carreira makes a satisfying companion piece to Ken Loach’s Sorry We Missed You. Go to Full Review

[Laura Carreira] is more austere in her story, tremendously rigorous and precise in her portrayal of the human cost of our ultra-consumerist and ultra-impatient society. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Without wallowing in her character's pain, always respecting her point of view, Carreira elegantly and without sordidness, portrays the harsh reality of a 21st-century worker. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Leon H @RT13589101 1 day ago What this film does perfectly is illustrate the struggle of low paid workers feeding the machine of ultra-capitalist corporations in a world of easy convenience consumerism that these workers can't afford. Isolation, loneliness, the inability to communicate within a world pre-occupied with the tech in their hands, dissatisfaction in work and life and the repetitive grind of daily chores are all laid bare. Where this film failed imo was to keep me interested and entertained throughout. The slow pace and repetitive scenes leave you feeling detached from the protagonist (ably played by Joana Santos) until a third act where I found myself emotionally invested in her efforts to better her career and life. This ends up feeling like a Ken Loach social realism movie without the 'feels'. See more S H @sidesix Jul 28, 2026 I love these kinds of social realism movies. For many people, they probably see it as slow and boring. There's no particular crescendo. However, for me, it showed the themes of loneliness, challenges with how we socialize, the gig economy, and the way we interact with our phones in a real way, and it makes you think. It definitely made me think about how I approach these situations and my own nervousness around talking to strangers, yet wanting to build friendships. I loved the film. See more Thanasis S @SahabReview Jan 30, 2026 A depiction of the misery that comes with poverty in societies built around money; the hopelessness of living paycheck to paycheck and the loneliness that comes with it, in a world where most pleasures have a price and even the smallest ones can be hard to afford. The story of a woman struggling to make ends meet working for a multinational company that makes big profits thanks to the hard work of people like her, giving them back cupcakes in return and dehumanising them. A dark and thought provoking movie. Well acted and great Location. See more Steve J @RT45359395 Nov 17, 2025 A heartrending, agonising insight into life within the 21st-century precariat, in which in reasing numbers of us are forced to live; and a beautiful, sensitive portrayal of a lost soul ekeing out an existence against the robotic meaninglessness of late-stage turbo-capitalism.
