The actors were all amazing. See more Dakota P @DaCinephile Aug 3 O Brother, Where Art Thou operates at a level of serendipity that is only explained with degrees of mysticism. Watching the characters interact with that mysticism is rewarding. I was deeply disappointed learning the Coen brothers never actually read Homer’s Odyssey and the film’s references to the epic are created from memories of an adaption. I was excited to look for parallels, but the film felt exposed when they appeared on screen after knowing the substance behind them wasn’t present (Cooley’s greaves). Judging the film on its own merits, OBWAT boasts an excellent ensemble in an epic of their own. No one forgets “I Am Man of Constant Sorrow”, nor how the rest of the soundtrack dots through the move in meaningful ways. The cinematography is unique and engaging and the writing sharp. The world on screen is shared by believers, skeptics, and religious exploiters alike, where there is always room for each, and the balance of karmic justice is never lost.
