Critics Consensus

A rom-com with the right ingredients, Notting Hill proves there's nothing like a love story well told -- especially when Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts are your leads.

There are plenty of incidental pleasures; some of the supporting players—especially Tim McInnerny as a lousy cook and Rhys Ifans as a scrofulous Welshman—threaten to steal the picture.

For all its cheesiness, Notting Hill delivers a very great deal of pleasure...

The ending is happy and ironic in equal measure, but most of the fun is just getting there with the right chemistry and compatibility.

Notting Hill may be built on an unlikely premise, but it’s the sincerity beneath it that makes it last.

When you watch Notting Hill now 26 years after its release, what’s distinct from the subgenre’s 21st-century downturn is how the film’s patient editing and lived-in directing sell writer Richard Curtis’ fantastical premise.

The result is as charming, witty, and wistful as the actors have proven themselves to be.

The humor was top notch, the romance was a bit lackluster. Very slow moving plot, but overall I enjoyed it.

The girlfriend is a die hard romcom person. So we watch a ton of these. Absolutely love this one. Great acting. Great dialogue. Lotta heart and laughs. Must see.

How can the scores be so low for what is one of the top Rom-Coms ever made?

Curtis and Grant decided we hadn't been punished enough, so back they came. Bunch of actors off British telly vs Hollywood A-lister = pure cringe. The jokes are telegraphed so far in advance you can mute the punchlines whenever necessary (i.e. always). Americans eat this crap up, but Brits want to crawl in a hole and die of second-hand embarrassment. The solution came in the 2000s, when British actors went over there and played American characters instead. No more transatlantic cringe.
