In this loose adaptation of Shakespeare's Henry IV, Mike Waters (River Phoenix) is a gay hustler afflicted with narcolepsy. Scott Favor (Keanu Reeves) is the rebellious son of a mayor. Together, the two travel from Portland, Oregon to Idaho and finally to the coast of Italy in a quest to find Mike's estranged mother. Along the way they turn tricks for money and drugs, eventually attracting the attention of a wealthy benefactor and sexual deviant.

Excellent performances by Phoenix and Reeves. An arthouse classic. It isn't particularly entertaining. Ending is ambiguous yet powerful. Overall, it is just okay. Somewhat overrated though.

Poetic ravages of the soul, and an imperfect, adulterated blues distortion. . . (And if you were irritated by that word salad, guess what? This ain't exactly Thursday night's fish sticks and mac'n'cheese, here, for sure, but it's my favorite film.)

I did not watch this film when it came out in 1991. I watched it last night and I found it very boring. I also really struggled with the acting as it was like Acting Class 101. I love Indie & Artistic films but this one did not do it for me.

Synopsis
