MB C @MB.Cinema Sep 21, 2026 **Maya & Samar** has a compelling premise, using a fast-moving romance between a Canadian journalist and an Afghan refugee to explore love, power, freedom, and the ethics of telling someone else’s story. The film’s strongest element is Amanda Babai Vieira’s performance as Samar, while the intimate cinematography gives the relationship an immediate visual appeal. Its central question—who has the right to tell another person’s story?—is genuinely provocative, but the film weakens its own argument by keeping Maya at the center while rarely giving Samar enough space to exist beyond the journalist’s perspective. The romantic chemistry works on the surface, yet the emotional development is not always strong enough to support the weight the film places on the relationship, and the journalism angle is sometimes handled too simplistically. **Maya & Samar** is clearly reaching for something thoughtful and challenging, but its execution makes the message less powerful than its premise suggests.
