The year is 1402. Margrete has achieved what no man has managed before. She has gathered Denmark, Norway and Sweden into a peace-oriented union, which she single- handedly rules through her young, adopted son, Erik. The union is beset by enemies, however, and Margrete is therefore planning a marriage between Erik and an English princess. An alliance with England should secure the union's status as an emerging European power but a breathtaking conspiracy is under way that can tear Margrete and all she believes in apart.

Margrete Queen of the North is a superbly mounted drama set in a variety of Scandinavian countries at the end of the 14th century and the beginning of the 15th century.

Great acting, design and camera-work. They change the historical facts to make the story more dramatic but hey, we know that BBC News does that all the time. Just accept that this happens.

There are hardly any good films set in this period of time, this has changed my view of what's possible. The back and forth over Oluf becomes slightly repetitive towards the end but that takes little away from the level of acting and building of tension throughout.

I enjoyed the historical aspect of the movie, knowing little of Scandinavia's past, and even searched Pomerania plus other topics brought up during the viewing.

Selfless sacrifice is what makes this world work and it's beauty is admired well inside this story. Plot was steady and uncompromising. Great performances by the cast and especially by Trine Dyrholm making the watch truly worthwhile. Reimagining of the ancient monarchy and society was done smoothly. Instead of painting the history in black the movie stand bold as an appreciation of the Scandinavian literature. A fitting use of visual effects with beautiful scenery. Producing this movie inspired by this tense folk tale was productive and a great find. Don't see a reason for retelling the story of Fake Oluf any sooner.

Hair styles 10/10 (love that intricate plaiting and looping around the ears on the queen). Jewellery 9/10. Furs 8/10. Unfortunately plot 4/10. It beggars belief that a formidable queen would dither about whether some broken down character is her son, supposedly killed 15 years back, and thereby cause political chaos in the Scandinavian union she so cleverly put together.
