A lonely, aging movie star named Bob Harris (Bill Murray) and a conflicted newlywed, Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson), meet in Tokyo. Bob is there to film a Japanese whiskey commercial; Charlotte is accompanying her celebrity-photographer husband. Strangers in a foreign land, the two find escape, distraction and understanding amidst the bright Tokyo lights after a chance meeting in the quiet lull of the hotel bar. I get what it was trying to portray, but it was too slow and melancholy for me. Very beautiful scenes of Tokyo and some of the themes addressed were relatable on a personable level.

Hands down one of my all time favorite films. The tone, atmosphere, sights and sounds whisk you away to the mystical sometime otherworldy city of Tokyo and greater Japan. I've never been to Japan but I leave half my heart there everytime I watch this film.

At first, Lost in Translation felt a bit slow and I couldn’t really understand what the plot was supposed to be. As the movie went on, I started to grow attached to the two main characters, and by the end I understood the message of the film. It left me feeling a little sad, but it also taught me something. I think it’s a movie you need to watch twice to fully appreciate. I recommend it if you want a break from action-packed or silly films. This is just my personal opinion.
