Andrew C @RT09045702 3d I thought this movie was excellent, minus a few issues. These smart people make some stupid mistakes and that is annoying. After watching it the first time those things really bothered me and I would have rated it three stars. Upon the second watch, a couple years later (today), I didn't notice them as much. The mistakes seemed more organic than contrived. What I noticed more though was how interesting the alien is and how horrifying the scenes are of it taking its victim. Other reviews say it's no Alien, and I agree. This movie starts with hope, and that makes the descent into horror all the more heavy when things go wrong and when that hope turns into pure fear. The actors are great. The dialogue is very strong. The plot isn't terribly original, but I don't know who watches a horror film thinking they're going to experience something totally original. In my opinion the movie is well done, and it deserves a much higher score than it gets from critics and audience. See more Larry M. @larson603 4d So disappointing, especially considering the cast. This one does things right, provided you understand that it is a horror movie. Don't expect some groundbreaking sci-fi. Suspenseful and solid. It doesn't make the mistake of trying to be a huge sci-fi invasion/spectacle movie, and come across as cheesy. If you like the more claustrophobic Alien-type films, you should like this. The effects are great. You actually forget that you are watching people pretend to be in micro-gravity. Though, some of the science aspects are a little stretched, like the tired trope of violent decompression that lasts for minutes. Probably helps that it had a good cast too. The discovery of extraterrestrial life aboard the International Space Station creates immediate tension, and the screenplay steadily raises the stakes as the crew's options become increasingly limited. Daniel Espinosa makes excellent use of the station's cramped, zero-gravity environment, creating a constant sense of claustrophobia and danger. Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, Ryan Reynolds, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Ariyon Bakare all give believable performances that help ground the desperate situation. The film also sticks the landing with a shocking final twist that's both surprising and well-earned, giving it a memorable ending. Unfortunately, several characters make questionable decisions simply to keep the story moving, and Calvin never develops beyond being an efficient killing machine. Even so, the suspense, strong cast, and unforgettable ending make Life an entertaining sci-fi thriller. See more Read all reviews
