Ola G @Ollie1972 Jul 25 Jane Campion's psychological/sexual thriller and adaptation of the 1995 novel of the same name, suffers from first of all a narrative structure that is not working and creating a wishy washy storyline, a miscasting in Meg Ryan as Frannie Avery (I guesss she tried to shake of her known cute comedic persona), a failed attempt to create some sort of erotic vibe while trying to be arthouse at the same time with jittery and unfocused camera work and an ending that completely flatlines. The dialogue about the film having undergone a later reappraisal for its subversion of the male gaze doesn't change the fact that "In the Cut" simply isn't a very good film. SEE LETTERBOXED FOR FULL REVIEW See more Madison L @Clothesgirl Apr 29 Way back in 2003, while having lunch with friends, they were all complaining about a horrible Meg Ryan movie that they had seen & they all vowed to never pay money for another Meg Ryan movie. Meg Ryan masturbating, the violence, and the film vulgarity were some of the reasons my friends walked out of the theater in the first 20 minutes! I didn't recall the name of the movie, but the other night on Roku, I ran across a free film named "In the Cut" & quickly realized this was the movie my friends hated. I endured the film for only 40 minutes (it was that awful) & fast forwarded to the end to see who was the killer. Meg Ryan is not known as a great actress & without her previous crutch of being the cute love interest in a feel good movie, my having to watch her acting attempt in this film was painful. Mark Ruffalo gave a good performance of being a slimy degenerate. The plot was trash, & all of the characters were trash. Meg Ryan looks lovely and interprets her conflicted persona very well. The movie rewards the patient viewer, but obviously its intended audience is not people who want to see a classic crime movie.
