After a particularly difficult job, hit men Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson) head to Belgium to hide out until things cool down. Ray hates the medieval city they land in, but Ken finds its beauty and peacefulness enchanting. Their experiences become increasingly surreal and possibly life-changing as they encounter tourists, locals, an American dwarf and a potential romance for Ray.

With "In Bruges." it feels like Martin McDonagh opened a window in a room where the air has been recycled endlessly.

[Martin McDonagh's] affinity with meandering, melodically rhythmic dialogue and volcanic eruptions of profanity serves him well in this witty, wordy film.

In Bruges has some cracking lines in it, a cracking performance from Brendan Gleeson as Ken, and some very funny, provocative jokes, but I still don't know... It's just all the violence that did me in.

A remarkably lighthearted black comedy for most of its runtime, often irreverent in a way that may be off-putting to some, but never malicious.

In Bruges is a darkly humorous film that should be seen not just for the way it subverts genre norms, but also for how it sculpts and redefines them into something better.

The best thing about In Bruges is, well, Bruges. The set-up makes no sense and the finale is way OTT, but the middle bit is mostly terrific. Gleason and Farrell are cool as two Irish gangsters on an impromptu holiday in, um, what's that place again...Bruges. Ken loves it, Ray hates it. There's a lot of gleefully un-PC comment, which makes In Bruges something of a tonic in the walking-on-eggshells 21st century. All the same, the story makes no sense and the gangsters' lopsided morality is more irksome than comedic. In fact youtuber Popcorn In Bed spotted a major plot flaw: why doesn't Ken simply lie to Harry when he calls him, and tell him the job is done? Would have made more sense, but then again, these guys aren't exactly quick-witted, are they? Credit to Ralph Fiennes (Harry) for keeping his estuary voice going for 99% of his screentime. If you can't get to visit the real Bruges, definitely rent this one.

A disturbing, absolutely fantastic film. I watched the "extras" it would have been way darker if they included some of them but, they really explain some of the motivations of the characters. What a city!

I’m confused by the high ratings. It’s an ok movie, but kind of weird. My husband said it’s the worst movie he has watched in a long time.

Good movie, not great. There are some areas, where it really drags on. The funny parts though, are really funny so it balances out. Predictable ending.

In Bruges is one of those rare films that gets better every time I watch it. It somehow balances dark comedy, crime, and genuine emotion without ever feeling forced. The dog scene is still one of my favorite moments in any movie. It’s hilarious, completely unexpected, and perfectly captures the film’s absurd sense of humor. One minute you’re laughing, and the next you’re reminded how quickly things can go wrong.
