Critics Consensus

Identity Thief's few laughs are attributable to Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman, who labor mightily to create a framework for the movie's undisciplined plotline.

There's something to offend everyone in Identity Thief: racist jokes, gay jokes, the word "vagina" wielded as an insult.

Feeble as comedy, the movie is needlessly violent, too, as if half the crew misguidedly thought they were making a foul-mouthed action thriller.

If the plot is going to be light-hearted and fun-loving, there's simply no room for extremely dark characters and situations.

Despite it's formulas and occasionally stale moments, I found myself surrendered to the entire journey and enjoying myself immensely.

This would-be comedy veers back and forth between mean and nasty and overly sentimental, resulting in a film that quickly grows tiresome.

I love any movie with Melissa McCarthy in it, this movie was actually really sweet and sentimental. I felt bad for her the entire movie..

Identity Theif could've been a comedy gem but instead it turned out to be another typical boring film with no effort being put into it, i'm sure Jason Bateman & Melissa McCarthy are a fine cast but they were given very little to work with, so i feel like this movie could've been far worse compared to "The Bounty Hunter" but this is worth skipping entirely.

It was ok. Bateman and Molly are relatively entertaining but could have been much more with their talent.

Surprisingly there's some heartfelt moments in this movie. Even though it's mostly a grossed out comedy. There are times when you feel sorry for Diana other times she's an asshat. Poor Sandy's just trying to get his identity back. There are moments of hilarity. But it's mostly a frat boy comedy full of juvenile humor. Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy are hilarious in this movie. These days most films are politically correct this is definitely not one of them. If you like your humor raw & raunchy then you'll love this movie.

Not sure why the ratings are so low. I think it’s a great comedy. Both Bateman and McCarthy were great and super funny. It’s one of those movies you like more and laugh more the second and third time watching it.
