When his young children are abducted by his old nemesis, Capt. Hook (Dustin Hoffman) middle-aged lawyer Peter Banning (Robin Williams) returns to his magical origins as Peter Pan. Peter must revisit a foggy past in which he abandoned Neverland for family life, leaving Tinkerbell (Julia Roberts) and the Lost Boys to fend for themselves. Given their bitterness toward Peter for growing up -- and their allegiance to their new leader, Rufio -- the old gang may not be happy to see him.

The look of Hook is lively indeed but Steven Spielberg directs on autopilot here, giving in too quickly to his sentimental, syrupy qualities.

It's not fair to kids. With all his technical flair, Spielberg has created the equivalent of the 70-year-old with dyed hair, troweled makeup, in tie-dyes and high tops. And in doing that, messed with Neverland. Spielberg is old enough to know better.

The result is his most sentimental film, because unlike E.T. it refuses to take up residence within a child's mind, preferring to stay outside and fantasise about it. Condescension is no way to treat a fable.

Has long been my favorite movie of all time. Great performances by Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman. Hoffman is the definitive Capt Jas Hook.

Steven Spielberg was trying everything. Did you ever love the telling of Disney's classic tales? Did you dislike live action remakes? Did you want a re-imagining of their tales?... Other studios seem to retell better than Disney. Particularly, somebody like Universal or Sony/Tristar Pictures who did their live action adaptations better & this iteration will be spoken about. I find this an interesting is making a story of Peter Pan actually growing up youthless & have started a family. And we see Wendy, she is Granny Wendy who has never married Pan. It feels very different to have a grown up return to where he had always been a child. It really does have its problem, like what critics criticize such as its screenplay & a goof is that the Lost Bpys still live in Neverland when they moved into the Darling's in the original tale. Now back to the positive, the characterizations are awesome: Mr Smee is such a mood & Captain Hook is always like his original iteration & evilness.
