Critics Consensus

A gift for long-suffering fans after numerous subpar sequels, David Bruckner's Hellraiser unlocks the puzzle box for getting this franchise back on the right track.

Audience Says

The 2022 Hellraiser is better than a lot of the other films in this franchise, but it's still nowhere near as scary or exciting as the original.

What works most about the new Hellraiser are its leads. Odessa A’zion’s performance makes up for a lot of what the script lacks. Go to Full Review

The elaborate new Cenobite designs owe as much to Guillermo del Toro’s bioclockwork as Barker’s S&M body mods, but yet again the emissaries of Hell stand around being philosophically evil rather than doing much of anything. Go to Full Review

The re-imagined Cenobites are off putting and sometimes horrifying, which is fabulous. Jamie Clayton as The Priest aka lady pinhead is something to behold, and strangely sexless as a character. Go to Full Review

It may be the third-best Hellraiser movie, but you really have to have seen fifth-through-eleventh best to know what a relief that is. Go to Full Review

In David Bruckner’s 2022 renditionof Hellraiser, things change. He has no intention of remaking the same film and goes with his own screenwriters to helm a modern version of a tale that isn’t easy to dig into. Go to Full Review

Carlos H @carloshenriquec 1 day ago A great, fun, and terrifying experience. I simply loved many of the artistic choices made in this film. The soundtrack is incredible, making its presence felt from the very first seconds. The direction is excellent, and the cinematography successfully immerses us in that world of pain and nightmares. The cast is amazing, with a standout performance by Odessa A'zion; she possesses a screen presence and a unique magnetism that make it impossible to look away. Her hairstyle is worth a mention, too—it’s simply fantastic and evokes the styles of the 80s (the decade the original film was released). I also appreciated that the climax takes place in a remote, seemingly abandoned mansion—a nod to the conventions of the genre in past decades. It is also symbolic that the wealthy character's home—once a setting for orgies and gatherings—effectively serves as a gateway for those creatures. I really liked the relationship between Riley and Matt, and the ending broke my heart. See more Brandon L @RT44401498 2 days ago Completely forgettable. Does not feel like a movie about extreme sadism. Hellraiser films tend to suffer because they want to sell them to teenie-boppers rather than make cult classics. See more Alex B @AlexBioni 5 days ago A New Box, Same Hell I like the story this time around. Riley is a struggling addict trying to find her way before discovering the puzzle box. I was rooting for her, and Odessa A'zion does a great job. The box's different forms add mystery. The Cenobites look sick, especially the new designs, and their introduction is awesome. The expanding car scene is original, and Pinhead's reveal packs a punch. I prefer the original design, but this version is great too. The violence made me wince, especially the throat scene. Chatter's design is crazy, and the blood and dismemberment look great. I love the mansion, the final 20 minutes, and the blood from the box reaching the glass roof. The opening drags, taking too long to get to the Cenobites. Trimming 10 minutes would help. Riley also drops the box at the worst possible time. The dialogue can be rough, and the villain is just a rich crybaby. The twist even caught me off guard on a second viewing. See more D P @DanWade Oct 6, 2026 When it comes to horror movies, I'm all for the classics. There are very few modern horror movies I enjoy, and even fewer remakes/reboots etc. But I have to say this is my favourite of all the Hellraiser movies. I even prefer Clayton's portrayal of Pinhead more than Bradley's, and find it more faithful to the original book. The characters here are flawed and relatable, and their plight is something I can really invest in. It's exactly what a Hellraiser movie should be.
