John M @eerietomb 11h Single location / confined chamber thrillers live their healthiest lives these days in the indie underground, especially within the horror oeuvre. Writer/director/editor Brock Bodell keeps us as the audience in the dark from the first scene as much as Lena herself, waking up in this wild, weird, unpleasant situation and living through her experience. As Lena slowly pieces together what is actually happening (and it’s a well-layered tale filled with clues, some of which will most probably only reveal themselves in hindsight or with future watches), the claustrophobia of the setting opens up more and more, cleverly rolling back the tension in favour of more evolved characters in a wild action-packed final act. This final act, which defines the film as a whole, does go off the rails a little bit, raising a few logistical questions, but the objective is very clear and there’s a certain amount of satisfaction in the unfurling reveal after a VERY entertaining 90 minutes. Nothing is as it seems, each bump in the road could be the one that knocks you down and you never get up from. And the cinematography is beautiful, the music is genius and well placed. It passed the time and the acting was good. Some decisions just don’t make sense and they rely on that for the story. It’s a good premise, they could have done so much more. Almost anything else. There is a good twist. Like SO many promising movies these days it drags in the middle like they dont know how to get to the end. Acting was fine, you can tell they wanted Qualley, Mads Mikkelson and Zendaya but just got lookalikes to match that vibe for 100 dollars.
