L S @LS253 Aug 3 There's a joyless energy to a lot of the negative reviews of this. Is it perfect? No. Is it a rollicking nifty fun ride through a brilliantly realised fairy tale land that stands up? It absolutely IS that. It's plot thin and at times heavy handed with the action, but perfectly solid entertaining fun. Would recommend. Don’t listen to these uber sensitive cry baby feminists who don’t rate on the quality of the film, but only on a few scenes that tug at their panties. It’s actually hilarious how upset they are getting and giving it a one start rating only because of a few scenes. The fight scenes and effects, (actually a lot of what looks like special effects, isn’t),are amazing. Famke is STUNNING in her witch and human form. Most of the criticism seems less about the plot and more about agenda‑driven bashing from feminists and squares, with arguments that feel ridiculous. Sure, it plays with plenty of anachronisms and mixes different lore—but so what? The starting point is a fairy tale with a candy house, so demanding realism is pointless. The cast is decent, and the script and direction are serviceable. The real issue is that it tries to cram too many genres into one film, never fully satisfying any fandom and irritating all of them with the inevitable shortcomings. Still, it’s watchable, and maybe it’ll pick up some cult status down the line. Who knows. It tries to make the heroes — two siblings — look heroic while committing acts that echo real historical atrocities during medieval witch hunts, when thousands of innocent women were burned, hanged, or executed. The sexualization of women in the film, including gratuitous nudity and male gaze moments, only adds to the discomfort. It is not a thrilling or empowering story; it is a regressive, exploitative spectacle that treats female suffering as entertainment.
