Critics Consensus

With just enough human drama to anchor the sweeping spectacle of giant monsters smashing everything in sight, Gareth Edwards' Godzilla satisfyingly restores the franchise's fire-breathing glory.

Every time Edwards' Godzilla rears up, you stiffen with excitement. Every time he roars, Edwards wants you to feel it and wince.

'Godzilla' doesn't feel cynical; there's a sense of joy to the picture, of honest-to-God fun, which separates it from many of its summer movie brethren.

This isn't a thinking man's Godzilla, exactly, but it's certainly clever where it counts.

Amazingly, “Godzilla,” while actually having a trainwreck in it (two in fact), is not a complete trainwreck itself.

A-

Godzilla isn’t a perfect film by any means, but it takes aspects of what we know about Godzilla and pieced it together in a way that felt real, intense and big.

Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla is a beast of a film, and while it does brush its thick tail close to greatness, it is not without its flaws.

One of the greatest Godzilla movies ever and a perfect start to begin the Monsterverse franchise.

Starts off well with some character-driven story featuring Bryan Cranston. After that its a never-ending tedious action scene. Needed at least half an hour edited out. Juliette Binoche is sadly barely in it. Instead, the two stellar actors of Binoche and Cranston are sidelined for a young family I struggled to care about. Why is it two hours long? The special effects are well done but I really couldn’t care less when the story is uncompelling.
