Con man Ray Gleason (Ted Danson) is going after one last heist -- a stash of rare coins -- when his estranged son, Timmy (Macaulay Culkin), unexpectedly shows up. Ray is too busy with his robbery to spend much time with his son, so Timmy decides to blackmail Ray into acting like a father. He hides the coins and promises to give them back only after Ray takes him to amusement parks and baseball games. All the while, Detective Theresa Walsh (Glenne Headly) is closing in on Ray.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Overly formulaic and tonally inconsistent, Getting Even with Dad tries for a sentimental conclusion it doesn't earn and winds up a slapsticky cash grab aimed at fans of Home Alone.

The film should have been a roller coaster ride; instead, watching it is like trudging through a swamp. Go to Full Review John Hartl Seattle Times May 28, 2013

The new summer movies don't get much more formulaic than this bald attempt to capture the audience that can't wait to see the next three or four installments of Home Alone. Go to Full Review Jane Stefanski Empire Magazine May 28, 2013

The feeble attempts at verbal and physical slapstick are so lacking in humour that they're embarrassing for both the players and audience. Go to Full Review JK Sooja Common Sense Media Nov 3, 2021

Howard Deutch is a proficient enough second division director, but here he allows sentimentality to run riot, and the awkwardly ageing Culkin (approaching adolescence) no longer possesses the mischievous charm of old. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Douglas E @RT50442544 Jun 18, 2026 Faz tempo desde a última vez que parei para assistir a este filme. É melhor do que eu me lembrava. O filme é leve, tem vários momentos engraçados e alguns emocionantes. Vale muito a pena. Um clássico da Sessão da Tarde. The jokes pretty much always land (unless you don't have a sense of humour) and although it may not be quite as good as home alone, who cares its an enjoyable watch. I think my favourite thing is how the characters play off each other, Ray and Timmy's relationship really comes though and you can see the progression quite well, ending in a satisfying way.
