Critics Consensus

With a talented cast turned loose on a loaded premise -- and a sharp script loaded with dark comedy and unexpected twists -- Game Night might be more fun than the real thing.

The long joke of the narrative is adroitly handled, and for once the climax pays off in laughs.

The movie is a hollow throwback to classic comedy, and it shines only by contrast with dull studio competition.

The spoofy action set-pieces are ho hum. What's special is the minutiae-based, casually political banter.

Its great screenplay allows for a little more storyline and suspense then what we expect from most comedy films while Jason Bateman once again shows why he is the current king of comedy.

Flush with snickering hilarity and scoring plenty of points for swerving surprises, Game Night is infectiously entertaining with any cheese it serves.

Harkening back to the mid-budget comedy movies that have sadly disappeared from the mainstream, Game Night is the sort of breezy movie that has great potential for universal appeal, if only people are able to find out about it.

Overall, I thought the film was a fun watch, with the comedy being one of its strongest aspects. However, I did get confused and didn’t like the rushed introduction of the main antagonist. Ultimately, I think the film is funny and entertaining and would recommend it to people who enjoy Action Comedies / Mysteries.

This is one of the best comedies I've ever seen! Every minute of the movie was hilarious in its own way, and each member of the cast contributed diversely funny performances that made the movie so much fun to watch. I definitely recommend it for comedy, action, and crime fans!

I regret watching it. It was a fine-not-great watch until near the end when there was a big twist that didn’t make any sort of sense. It promised tight construction, but it turned out nonsensical; the unkept promise felt like a breach of trust. It promised to be clever but failed, which is super annoying. It just felt dumb after the reveal. It left me with a bad taste in my mouth, a sense of betrayal, like they had a low opinion of their audience. I want those hours of my life back.

This movie is utterly preposterous. How this got 85 from critics and 75 from audience is confounding. This reminds me of every slapstick “comedy” with a “dark” twist. It’s like this was written by people that had only seen looney tunes and Gilmore girls and acted by a star studded cast that seems confused what they are making. The movie ends 4 separate times, none of which are satisfying at all. The parts that end up funny are not the parts they want to come off as funny, and the parts they obviously want laughs at are confusing and just dumb. I also have a problem with movies that make fun of people disrespecting and mishandling firearms, as though that’s how real people handle firearms, and it’s clear the actors really think they are making a good point but it makes me cringe.
