Critics Consensus

From the Land of the Moon benefits from striking visuals and strong work from Marion Cotillard, but they're both ultimately overcome by a story that drifts into wan melodrama.

Almost laughable in its broad, empty portrayal of sexual desire. Go to Full Review Alan Zilberman Washington Post Aug 3, 2017

Moments of visual beauty only call attention to the stilted dialogue and maudlin plot that otherwise define the film. Go to Full Review Sheri Linden Los Angeles Times Aug 2, 2017
Garcia never gets a grasp on her protagonist's contradictions, or those of her story - certainly not enough to pull off the movie's jaw-dropper of a twist. Go to Full Review Marya E. Gates Cool People Have Feelings, Too. (Substack) Feb 12, 2024
It’s melodramatic to the hilt, but it pulled me in and made me sob like a baby by the end. Go to Full Review Jorge Ignacio Castillo Planet S Magazine Feb 5, 2020

From the Land of the Moon is not without merit -Cotillard's expressive face is compulsively watchable- but be prepared for some significant suspension of disbelief. Go to Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com Oct 10, 2019

Sep 21, 2018 The drama & romance film potrays Gabrielle who is not in the best stable condition. I wish that the end was different but it is what it is. As always i admired Marion Cotillard's acting. See more Sep 7, 2018 guilty of loving this film... and all the characters therein. ah !... and what a twist in the finale. captured from start to finish. dare i say it... i could watch it again. Typical French movie. See more Mar 17, 2018 This film is a brilliant exploration of the fragility of the human mind and the redemptive power of patient love. Based on the negative reviews here, it appears that many have experienced it on a very superficial level (i.e., the sex is not the focus despite its explicit portrayal). Those who take issue with the plot twist at the end must believe that intense self-delusion is not possible. This will come as quite a shock to those who have spent their lives studying multiple personality disorder.
