Agent 007 (Sean Connery) is back in the second installment of the James Bond series, this time battling a secret crime organization known as SPECTRE. Russians Rosa Klebb (Lotte Lenya) and Kronsteen are out to snatch a decoding device known as the Lektor, using the ravishing Tatiana (Daniela Bianchi) to lure Bond into helping them. Bond willingly travels to meet Tatiana in Istanbul, where he must rely on his wits to escape with his life in a series of deadly encounters with the enemy.

He feels fully settled into the role here: suave, amused, dangerous, and ruthless when needed, with a looser confidence than he had in Dr. No. The film also works well as a more grounded spy thriller. The cipher machine plot, double-crosses, surveillance, assassins, and Cold War manipulation give it a serious espionage feel that separates it from the larger, more gadget-heavy Bond films that would follow. Robert Shaw plays Red Grant with patience and controlled menace, making him feel more dangerous than Dr. No did in the previous film. The Orient Express section is the clear highlight, using the confined train setting for deception, suspense, and a brutal Bond/Grant fight. The pacing can feel slow by modern Bond standards, but From Russia with Love is good, stylish, and one of the more focused early entries.
