From the villain to the strained efforts at Terrence Malick-style lyricism, the film is earnest but sentimentally simplistic and plodding. It is, however, useful as a cinematic YA novel, taking a palatably approach to an ugly chapter in our history.

What a beautiful film from start to finish. Amazing gem of an indie. Very intense, made me jump, cry, gasp, etc. However, then these lighter, touching moments would happen, little smiles, chuckles, the audience would laugh, letting you take a breath. The location and landscape are stunningly beautiful. So well acted, I wanted to embrace some characters and yell at others. The music is still in my head. Authentic and well-researched.

The film brought out raw emotions about the cruelty of slavery alongside the discovery of an unexpected friendship and love that measured strength and bravery during the most tragic times of our country's history. It brought to life a new story that we haven't seen before.
