A therapist (Stellan Skarsgard) treats a black stripper (Halle Berry) who has multiple personality disorder, including that of an imperious white racist.

Critics Consensus

Halle Berry gives it her all (and then some), but Frankie & Alice is ultimately too narratively strained and clumsily assembled to do her performance justice.

Frankie & Alice feels like a film that might have been groundbreaking 40 years ago but has cable-TV movie of the week written all over it in 2014.

Berry has proven she's willing to take on enormous challenges, and she certainly exceeds her grasp here. Perhaps that's why Frankie & Alice plays more like an elaborate acting workshop than a movie.

While all this channel-switching and inevitable unearthing of psychic demons generates a great awards-season clip, it doesn't necessarily lead to a satisfying drama.

Frankie and Alice is a buffet of character study for Ms. Berry to sink her teeth into, which is exactly what she does with gusto and conviction

Modestly engaging, the film is more suited to cable TV and Netflix.

... provides Berry with a diva showcase for plenty of over-the-top emotional outbursts and violent tantrums.

How did they convince Halle Berry to star in this confusing piece of crap. She can act but no one else can. Waist of her talents. I hope she was well paid for it.

Halle Berry is a Great Actress!!!

A hefty delivery that justified the story's subjective psychology with Berry's channeling performance, alongside Skarsgard's humane empathetic support of gentle approach, taking it to the fullest but anchored down by illogic shortcomings. (B)

Was it slow. Yes. Was it a little disjointed. Yes. Was it a great story worth getting to the end of. Yes.

Good to see Halle really acting again, after cashing checks on eleventy X-Men movies. However, she can't quite pull off the Beautiful Mind-Psycho-Split thing. Valiant effort, because schizophrenia is serious subject matter. I've seen much worse films.

Berry has no idea how bad the film is. Unfortunately the great supporting cast is given nothing to do.
