See more Vixo S @vixo_six Jul 5 Frances Ha is a warm, simple and deeply human film about growing up, accepting change and learning to let go of the version of life you imagined. Frances is not always easy to fully identify with, since her way of seeing the world can feel naive and messy, but that is also what makes the film honest. Greta Gerwig brings tenderness, awkwardness and sadness to a character who feels real without needing to be ideal. Noah Baumbach’s black and white direction gives the film the feeling of a memory forming while it is still happening. It is light, funny and melancholic, but also emotionally precise. What stays is not a grand lesson about adulthood, but the quiet understanding that growing up means losing certain comforts while still searching for a place of your own. She’s got that same messy, awkward charm as Fleabag, though I found the sudden shift to a happy ending a little hard to swallow after all that gloom, but maybe I’m just not ready for that much optimism yet. While it's funny from time to time, the overall effect is sadness as Frances struggles to make her life work. I really identified with the character the first time I saw it, maybe 30 years ago, this time not so much but a really enjoyable film that seems very timely today.
