Death and regret hang over the film palpably, and Miniucchi's willingness to put her characters through disaster and humiliation while still plainly empathizing with them is what keeps the film surprising and its characters winning, in spite of themselves Go to Full Review Tim Grierson L.A. Expired pretends to be a valentine to society's outcasts, but it's just one more indie comedy that mocks its characters while sucking up to its knowing audience. Go to Full Review Lou Lumenick New York Post Jun 20, 2008

Unconventionally quirky in its unassuming blue-collar bluntness, Expired is comically horrifying in its examination of lonely people living on the fringe of professional obscurity and personalized disarray. Go to Full Review Lewis Beale Film Journal International Jun 23, 2008
Miniucchi's screenplay is an unwieldy blend of pathos and unsettling moments, which become increasingly uninteresting as the film trudges to a dreary close. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Scott E @RT19581245 Nov 27, 2025 This movie should have been called "The Dick and the Doormat." See more Amanda L @RT00328743 Jan 27, 2025 A touching examination of love’s ability to excavate a soul out from under the crust of bad behavior, even if the digging assumes several iterations of romance—even if the first round “fails.” See more May 8, 2015 I'm always surprised to note that so many disliked this film upon it's release. Truly off-beat and quirky, it is also a painfully uncomfortable and entertaining story of two characters who do not know how to inter-connect or connect with anyone. Despite what some have written, this film is realistic. And, Samantha Morton is amazing. See more Sep 15, 2013 Kooky. Just as I like it. See more Feb 6, 2013 Pathetic and depressing "love story".. almost painful to watch, with axcelent performances by Samantha Morton and Jason Patrick.. See more Ola G @Ollie1972 May 29, 2011 Claire Barney (Samantha Morton) is a metermaid in Los Angeles. She is kind, but a bit lonesome and odd. She takes care of her mother, who suffers from a stroke and has lost her speech. One day Claire bumps into parking officer Jay Caswell (Jason Patric). A man with severe anger and frustration issues and on the border of being a sociopath. Eventually the mismatched couple end up in a very disfunctional and turbulent love situation. Never been a fan of Samantha Morton, but both she and Jason Patric gives fine performances in "Expired". I like how the movie has been shot, with a lot of odd angles and closeups. The disfunctional dynamics between Claire and Jay made me cringe and stress me. Thus, the actors really succeeded to give life to their characters. "Expired" is not too shabby at all.
